“The Boy, The Girl, The Wolf” is an album about heroes and villains, about truths and lies, about battles fought against outside forces and against ourselves. The instrumentation relies on vocal layering with a piano foundation, and a recurring percussive pulse reminds the listener of an executioner’s drum.
Drawing on her own struggles with depression and mental health, Cat Jahnke brings into focus an issue that affects so many. Through these songs, Cat shows the strength and community that can come from sharing our most painful stories, and that sometimes a “glimmer in the gloom” can be the brightest beacon.
Lyrics
Slow Motion
Let’s take a minute here
And let this moment sink in
Feels like we’re getting older
Think of the places we’ve been
And lovers leave
And friends grow
The seasons come
The seasons go
And we’ll never be this young again
So, let’s take it slow motion
Slow motion
Wish it could stay
But, baby, everything changes
Oh oh oh oh (x6)
So, baby, take my hand
And watch the stars floating past
Here comes the sunrise
You know, the nights never last
And lovers leave
And friends grow
The seasons come
The seasons go
And we’ll never be this young again
So, let’s take it slow motion
Slow motion
Wish it could stay
But, baby, everything changes
Oh oh oh oh (x12)
(Slow Motion x4)
And lovers leave
And friends grow
The seasons come
The seasons go
And we’ll never be this young again
The Boy, The Girl, The Wolf
With a coldness in his heart
He bids her venture near
Her cheeks flush in the dark
As he whispers in her ear
And no one heard
A single word
So no one knew why
The girl cried and she cried
Aooo
Aooo
Aooo
Aooo
With a shadow in her heart
She calls the wolf to heel
Fangs flash in the dark
As she whispers in its ear
And no one heard
A single word
So no one knew why
The wolf cried and it cried
Aooo
Aooo
Aooo
Aooo
With a fire in its heart
It knows the boy is near
So it stalks him in the dark
And then whispers in his ear
And no one saw
The tooth or claw
So no one knew why
The boy cried and he cried
Aooo
Aooo
Aooo
Aooo
Asylum
Ran away but they caught up
Slipped a blindfold
Tightened buckles
All the normal things that friends do
When they’re helping you
Brought me back and locked me up again
Turned the key and
Turned the lights out
Turned to me and said, “Well, lucky you!
We came to your rescue”
I’m committed
And the walls are feather down
There’s a trap door in the ceiling
But they lace me tighter now
Ran away but they caught up
Slipped a blindfold
Tightened buckles
All the normal things that friends do
When they’re helping you
Brought me back and locked me up again
Turned the key and
Turned the lights out
Turned to me and said, “Well, lucky you!
We came to your rescue”
I’m committed
And the walls are feather down
There’s a trap door in the ceiling
But they lace me tighter now
Who says that you’re ever
Alone in your head
Just because we all agree
Doesn’t mean there’s fewer of me
Black Heart, Black Soul
Black cat, black dog
Black river, black heart
Black tie, black gold
Black sky, black soul
See them comin’ ’round the corner
See them comin’ ’round the bend
They’re gonna get you
They’re gonna get you in the end
Black cat, black dog
Black river, black heart
Black tie, black gold
Black sky, black soul
And there ain’t nowhere to run to
And there ain’t no place to hide
They’re gonna get you
Well at least, at least you tried
See them comin’ ’round the corner
See them comin’ ’round the bend
They’re gonna get you
They’re gonna get you in the end
Black cat, black dog
Black river, black heart
Black tie, black gold
Black sky, black soul
Black heart, black soul
Black heart, black soul
Black heart, black soul
Black heart, black soul
Slip Away
I feel like I’m going crazy
I don’t remember days
The seasons, they’re a-changing
I’ve let them slip away
And no one’s making sense
I just can’t seem to keep it straight
A mind’s a terrible thing to waste
I’ve let mine slip away
Who can pull me back?
Who can keep me safe?
There’s no one left, there’s no one left
I’ve let them slip away
So how long can I last?
How long can I wait?
How long can I hold on
Before I slip away?
Ain't Got Me Fooled
Ain’t got me fooled
Ain’t got me fooled
I know it well
And you know it too
You ain’t got me fooled
You ain’t got me fooled
Oh she may believe you
Think you’re telling the truth
But you look in the eye
You lie, you lie
You lie and you lie and you lie
Yes you do
You ain’t got me fooled
Ain’t got me fooled
I know it well
And you know it too
You ain’t got me fooled
You ain’t got me fooled
Oh I wish I was wrong
Wish we just got along
But I’m always right
And we fight and we fight
And on and on and on and on
You ain’t got me fooled
You ain’t got me fooled
I know it well
And you know it too
You ain’t got me fooled
You ain’t got me fooled
Here
Over the field
Over the sea
Who knows what may wait for me
But I’m already here
Over the rainbow
Over the moon
I could run, they’re leaving soon
But I’m already here
(Here)
Where I spend my time
(Here)
Where it all goes down
Maybe it’s bad
Maybe it’s good
I’ll never know, I’ll just stand where I’ve stood
I’m already here
(Here)
Where I spend my time
(Here)
Where it all goes down
You Can Be The Light
It starts in your heart, open up
And it warms you from within
Don’t lock it down
Don’t lock it up
You gotta give yourself away
You gotta give yourself away
You can be the hero
You can be the light
You can be the dawn
At the end of someone’s night
You gotta take a stand
You gotta brave the fight
You gotta lend a hand
You gotta make it right, yeah
You can be the hero
You can be the light
The calm in the storm
The glimmer in the gloom
Don’t lock it down
Don’t lock it up
You gotta give yourself away
You gotta give yourself away
CHORUS
There’s days, I know,
When you’ll need your own hero
Days that will bring you to your knees
Just count to ten
And then again
And let that hero be me
I can be your hero
I can be your light
I can be the dawn
At the end of your long night
I’m gonna take a stand
I’m gonna brave the fight
I’m gonna lend a hand
I’m gonna make it right, yeah
I will be your hero
I will be your light
It's Over Now
Strike the set, rip out the seats
Torch the hall and bomb the streets
It’s over now
It’s over now
We’re done
Poison the fruit, soil the stream
Set fire to the forest, burn every tree
It’s over now
It’s over now
We’re done
Mmm Mmm
Mmmmmmm
Bottle the blizzard, sop up the sea
Lock the light and the dark
And then throw out the key
It’s over now
It’s over now
We’re done
Bury the daughters and bury the sons
The mothers, the fathers, the lonely ones
Existence is futile
And God’s on the run
It’s over now
It’s over now
It’s over now
It’s over now
We’re done
Mmm Mmm
Mmmmmmm
Amen
Amen
Amen
Liar Lay Me Down
If you find me under the undertow
If you see me under the sea
If the bog is drained
And you discover my remains
Just let me lie
‘Cause you won’t find any clues
Beneath the blood and dust and bruise
It’s sad to say
But there’s nothing you can do
So don’t spend all your days
On my tragic hopeless case
When I’m telling you now
You’d never know the truth
A liar lay me down
A liar lay me down
In the grave
Have patience, wait,
Soon you’ll figure out my fate
For at the pearly gates
I’ll tell it all to you
So stay strong love
It won’t be long, it won’t be long
Because he’s coming now
He’s coming for you too
A liar lay me down
A liar lay me down
In the grave
Ooh
Ooh
Ooh
Ooh
A liar lay me down
A liar lay me down
A liar lay me down
A liar lay me down
A liar lay me down
A liar lay me down
In the grave
Cher Monsieur
Cher Monsieur
Qu’est ce que tu veux?
À deux est on mieux?
Mmm
Mmm
La vie est précieuse
Elle est mystérieuse
Et malicieuse
Mmm
Mmm
Cher Monsieur
Qu’est ce que je veux?
À deux somme nous mieux?
Mmm
